Hunting & Home in the Southern Heartland: The Best of Archibald Ruthledge

Hunting & Home in the Southern Heartland : The Best of Archi
An excellent insight into the heart of the sportsman and the South's transition to the 20th century. If you are a hunter, you will appreciate how Mr. Ruthledge brings the excitement of the hunt to the reader. If you are a Southerner, you will better understand the critical time when the South shook off the long-standing burdens of the Reconstruction and joined America's march into the 20th century. Today's reader may be shocked by the way that Mr. Ruthledge describes the interactions between whites and blacks during the early part of the 20th century. It is certainly politically incorrect by today's standards. But it does reveal a much deeper and respectful interaction between the races, despite the caste system of the day. All in all an excellent book about hunting in the South.

I'm Going to Have a Little House: The Second Diary of Carolina Maria De Jesus (Engendering Latin America Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (September, 1997)
Authors: Carolina Maria De Jesus, Melvin S. Arrington, Robert M. Levine, and Carolina Maria de Jesus
Average review score:

The moving story of what happened to C. de Jesus
Many readers know Carolina de Jesus's memior "Child of the Dark" but few knew that she wrote a second book about her bitter journey from her favela shack to the brick house of her dreams. There, she was treated just as badly as she had been when she was a scavenger for garbage in the favela. As a former Peace Corps volunteer in Brazil (too many years ago!!) I loved this book. It is riveting, unexpected, and filled with insights about how Carolina de Jesus saw the world. The editor's background description and analysis is excellent, too.

James Henry Hammond and the Old South: A Design for Mastery
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (May, 2000)
Author: Drew Gilpin Faust
Average review score:

A good read about a not nice guy
Hammond is not a nice guy. He married for money, was not a great father, and campagined for elected office at time when no one else did and against the 'party' candidate to boot. Most interesting of all was his commitment to the Confederate cause but resistance to the call for material and manpower to help the cause. In the end, he could not believe it when his slaves were jubilant about the prospect of freedom. Through Hammond's eyes we see the south changed forever by the Civil War, not only due to the lost of their slaves but also by the unsouthern actions the Confederate government had to take and how they affected the southern way of life. Hammond is not a nice guy but this very readable book provides an excellent insight to the antebellum southern mind.

Awesome
Well, my grandfather wrote this book a year before he passed away and I think it is amazingly good. I was 16 when he published it. I am not sure that anyone will ever read this but there is a chance. My grandfather was a wonderful man, a brilliant historian, and an incredible intellect. I would recommend this book to anyone.
